Summer School Abroad: Boosting Your Master's Application

Will Attending Summer School Abroad Improve Your Chances at a Master’s Course?

Short Answer - It’s highly beneficial, but not essential!

Many top universities like Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, LSE, LBS, and ESADE offer summer programs where students from other colleges can enroll for courses taught by university faculty on their campuses. While these programs can be costly, they provide an excellent opportunity to:

  • Enhance your skills by deep diving into a subject of your interest.

  • Network with university professors and like-minded students from around the world.

  • Boost your GPA if your college considers summer school grades.

  • Experience student life at the university.

  • Explore a new city!

In 2019, I had an amazing experience at the LSE Summer School, where I took a month-long course on ‘Open Innovation’. I learned about Design Thinking, a completely new concept for me. Since then, I have hosted multiple design thinking workshops based on what I learned during the course. The recommendation from my summer program professor also helped me strengthen my Master’s application and secure admission at LSE!

While these programs have limited seats and are highly exclusive, they are an excellent way to demonstrate your interest in studying at a particular university. If you're unsure about which country to study in, a summer school experience might help you decide!
